ATI Launches AVIVO

“You’ll never look at your PC the same way again”. That’s a pretty big boast from ATI, but it has a lot of faith in its latest technology, which it dubs Avivo.

Avivo is a video capture, playback and display technology that combines both hardware and software. We will see it integrated into all future ATI desktop, mobile, chipset and workstation products and the company claims it will have an unprecedented level of colour reproduction, as well as universal connectivity support and super smooth high def playback.

In fact, looking deeper, the claims are rather intriguing. Avivo boasts the ability to display 64 times the number of colours available on current PCs via 10bit processing, 12bit analogue-to-digital conversion, support for extreme resolutions such as 2560 x 1600 and DVI, HDMI, VGA, Component, S-Video and composite ports will feature on all machines. As for the “flawless” video playback, this is achieved via a hardware assisted decode of Mpeg 2, H.264 and VC-1 codecs. Video capture also sounds promising with advanced features including 3D comb filtering (previously limited to high-end televisions), front-end video scaling and hardware Mpeg compression.

ATI is rolling out all manner of partners to back its lofty ambitions for Avivo, with glowing comments from the likes of AMD, Cyberlink, InterVideo and Microsoft. As always, however, the proof will be in the pudding and we’ll give Avivo a good going in a dark alley TR Style as soon as we get a compatible machine in our mitts.
