ATI Straps 512MB To Video Card

Yes, we know: the headline says it all. ATI has gone and lumped half a gig of memory onto one of its graphics cards (an X850 series to be precise) and here’s a pic.

In fact, beyond the photography, you are not going to get much more since ATI held back any further details. That’s right, no snippets about the memory type being used or even whether this flavour of X850 will have a boosted clock speed. We’ll take it as given, however, that this little stunt will see ATI regain its benchmark crown, that is until nVidia pulls the same trick (almost inevitably) in a few weeks time.

Without further details gauging quite how much of an improvement the new 512MB card will be over the competition is impossible, but theoretically the extra memory should see the biggest gains when running games at extremely high resolutions with anti-aliasing. After all, this is where video cards traditionally run low on memory. Here's a closer look:

In addition, while ATI is smirking to itself about this coup, rival nVidia it seems has accidentally given out the codename for its next generation video card. Purported to be called the G70, it would see the graphics giant move away from its traditional “NV” prefix. No hard facts are known about the G70 at this stage other than it is expected to be an entirely new architecture, taking nothing from the current NV40 series and it should support SLI. Bring It On!
