S3’s return to the graphics fold at the end of last year was a welcome one, if only because it made the graphics market a little more interesting. Though its DeltaChrome GPU failed to take the market by storm, S3 is persevering and is back with a new offering designed to give ATI’s All-in-Wonder cards a run for their money.

S3 has now secured the services of Club-3D to bring to market its new OmniChrome S4 chip. This is based on the DeltaChrome S4 Nitro chipset. This is an AGP 8x, DirectX 9 part with a four-pixel pipeline architecture. The board has a clock speed of 350MHz, with 300MHz of DDR memory (600MHz effective). There will be 128MB of memory on board with a 128-bit memory bus.

The Club-3D OmniChrome S4 features a Philips TV tuner module for analogue TV signals. In addition the card offers HDTV Component Video-In and Video-Out (VIVO). Also appearing is the Chromotion Programmable Video Engine, which is designed to enhance media playback with a number of real-time video processing operations.

Club-3D's retail package includes a remote control and thanks to a recent deal with Intervideo, the latest versions of Intervideo’s WinDVR and WinDVD programs. WinDVR includes a Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) so users can easily schedule recording to MPEG2 quality DVD, but it’s unclear at this stage whether this will include UK listings.

Club-3D is highlighting that the card doesn’t require any extra power connectors and only uses a small fan so won’t be too noisy for a lounge based PC.

Pricing is unannounced but is likely to undercut ATI’s 9600XT All-in-Wonder cards.
