Glossary » N
NAT
Network Address Translation. The simplest form of firewall that effectively hides all your local systems by mapping their IP addresses to the address of your Internet access device. Attackers can only see the external IP address and not the systems behind it.
Native Resolution
The resolution that an LCD is designed to operate at. An LCD has a native resolution because it has a fixed number of pixels. You cannot use an LCD with a native resolution of say 1,024 x 768 pixels and expect it to display a true resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels. An LCD can be fed with an input signal at a lower or in some cases a higher resolution than its native resolution, but these will typically be upscaled or downscaled respectively, usually with some degradation to the picture quality.
NLE
Non linear editing. Any editing process where any aspect of the project can be accessed without spooling or rewinding tape. A common term for digital editing systems such as Premiere or Edition.
NTP
Network Time Protocol - A protocol for synchronising time across multiple computers.
NTSC
National Television Standards Council. The US video standard, operating at 60 fields per second and 525 lines of video.
