EDL
Edit decision list. A basic table format that contains timecode values of cuts and clip arrangements that can be transferred between systems.
Electronic Viewfinder
Also known as EVF, these camcorder-style viewfinders are tiny colour screens which replicate what’s on the main screen, including exposure info and other details. Typically employed on cameras with 5X or longer zooms.
Elementary stream
An MPEG2 format in which the audio and video are saved separately – suitable for DVD authoring.
Embedded audio
Describes a video file that contains the audio information.
EMBM
Environment Mapped Bump Mapping. Sometimes referred to as Perturbation Bump Mapping. A popular method of bump mapping that’s particularly suited to glossy surfaces like chrome or water. A special texture is used to specify how the base texture should look and an environment map is used to specify surface reflections. The bump map is used to “perturb” the environment map before applying the result to the base texture.
EMI
Electromagnetic Interference. Unwanted electrical or electromagnetic energy that affects electronic equipment.
Ethernet
The original form of the most popular type of network today that connects PCs together over shared cabling. It was called Ethernet in remembrance of the ether from which electromagnetic radiation was once thought to flow.
EV
Exposure Value. Refers to a range of lighting conditions from dark to bright which can be recorded or measured by an imaging system. Also used to describe increments during exposure compensation – an increase of 1EV is equivalent to doubling the exposure.
