Echoes
Developer: Binary Zoo
As the developers freely admit "Echoes is essentially our take on Asteroids and to save anyone else the trouble of making the comparison, yes, it's also "a bit like Geometry Wars." Combine the rock-blasting action of the former with the treated glowing visuals and twin-stick, move and fire controls of the latter and you pretty much get the idea. Lovely looking and horrendously addictive, it epitomises everything that's good about the freebie shooter scene.

Every Extend
Developer: Omega
Established as a shmup classic, it's actually pretty debatable whether Every Extend qualifies as a shmup or not, mostly because instead of shooting enemies, you blast them by detonating your ship/bomb. The trick is in the timing: explode in the right place and at the right time, and you can chain together explosions to take out a screen full of enemies all at once. The more you destroy, the more time you get on the clock, and the longer you can keep your high score rolling. Every Extend is the sort of game you pick up for a quick five minute session then find you've just wasted an hour. Those with low will-power really should not download it.

EndEffector
Developer: Kyoto University Micro Computer Club
An attempt to recreate the magic of classics like R-Type and Salamander using polygonal 3D graphics, the oddly titled EndEffector looks a bit dated, but packs a solid punch. Dodging bullets and tackling tough enemies is the name of the game, and tough boss battles appear to be a speciality. The music and sound effects, meanwhile, will take you right back to those good old days in the arcade. Not bad at all for a university computer club project.
