Sony PlayTV Seeing July Release? Update: Apparently Not

Rumour had it that PlayTV was supposed to be out by now but, as you may notice, that isn't quite the case. Aside from a quick preview by the BBC precious little has been heard about Sony's PVR-enabler for the PS3, but according to e-tailer Amazon the release may not be coming anything like as soon as we want.

Whether or not the prospective 31st of July release date Amazon is suggesting can be relied on is, of course, dubious. Sony initially suggested that PlayTV would launch "early in 2008" which by my reckoning at least puts them overdue. More so if the release doesn't happen until July.

Price wise Amazon is allowing pre-orders for £59.99, (with a £10 saving!) and will guarantee that you'll only pay the cheapest price offered before release. On that basis you may as well place an order even if you don't believe the purported ship date, just to guarantee the best price.

The wait will arguably be worth it, though, given the increased functionality that PlayTV will add to the PlayStation 3. The main benefit is the dual digital tuners, which are high-definition ready (when Freeview finally starts broadcasting HD), allowing the watching of one channel while another is recording Sky+ style. There's also the ability to use Remote Play to browse the EPG, start and stop recordings and even watch live TV on a PSP.

Here's hoping that Sony will prove Amazon wrong and release PlayTV sooner rather than later.

Update:
Amazon has now retracted pre-orders and scrubbed the date from the PlayTV page. Oh well...
