You'd have thought that Microsoft denying any plans to feature a Blu-ray drive in the Xbox 360 would quash any rumours that such an addition was forthcoming. Apparently, though, the fellows over in Redmond are being less than forthcoming with the truth because DigiTimes claims to have information suggesting that Lite-On is in fact developing an internal Blu-ray drive for Microsoft's Xbox 360.

That Lite-On is one of the current suppliers of Xbox 360 DVD drives adds some credence to the rumour, indicating it could well be approached were Microsoft to add Blu-ray to its console. Supposedly shipment of Blu-ray drives will start in the second half of this year, though at what price and features remains a mystery.

Given that Microsoft resisted integrating an HD DVD into the console, rumours of an internal Blu-ray drive seem rather strange. Most likely there has been a misunderstanding somewhere along the line. If there is to be a Blu-ray option for the Xbox 360 at all, it would surely be an external drive like the HD DVD drive add-on previously produced? File this one under unlikely, but still vaguely possible.
