Sony seems to be going all out with the PlayStation 3 to try and maintain its general acclaim as the best Blu-ray player to buy. Having already added BD Profile 1.1 Support and DivX playback with firmware 2.1, Sony is further enhancing the PS3's multimedia functionality with the next update, this time adding support for DB-Live (Profile 2.0) discs.

Unlike almost all Blu-ray players released to date, the PlayStation 3 actually sports the mandatory Ethernet port and onboard storage required for Profile 2.0 content. This allows discs to offer easy access to such content as video, ringtones and interactive games - presumably just in case the film itself doesn't grab your attention sufficiently.

As well as the aforementioned addition, firmware 2.20 also brings a small update to DivX and WMV playback, allowing videos larger than 2GB in size to be played; adds "Mosquito Noise Reduction" to DVD and Blu-ray processing; and includes a new "Resume Play" function that will enable films on DVD and Blu-ray to, oddly enough, resume play if exited, even if the disc is ejected - just like nearly every stand-alone player out there then.

Further the PS3 web browser has been enhanced to improve rendering speed and allow the streaming of embedded video. Finally, Remote Play will enable you to transfer music and photo playlists between the PS3 and any PSP you have handy, should you so wish. Sony suggests the update should arrive "before the end of March" so we shouldn't be waiting long.
