Mario Kart Wii is a game many have been awaiting for some time now. Today we're still waiting, but at least we now know how long we will be doing so for because Nintendo has finally announced a European release date for the game.

Friday the 11th of April is the day you all need a weekends worth of beer and pizza stockpiled for, so you have a bit of time to prepare. While questions such as "why is there a ‘K' in cart" probably won't be answered, the important matter of whether the game has been worth waiting for will.

Features will include four player split-screen and twelve player online multiplayer, 16 new tracks in addition to a further 16 from previous titles (as is tradition) and the inclusion of bikes for the first time in the franchise. Hopes are inevitably high and the game will come bundled with the Wii Wheel, allowing gamers to use the motion sensor in a more intuitive fashion, although the Classic controller and GameCube controllers will be supported as well.

The launch will also see the arrival of the Mario Kart channel to the Wii Home Page, enabling players to compare scores (such as best lap times) and check their online ranking against friends. If you've already completed Super Mario Galaxy and need some way to get some use from your Wii, this could be just the ticket - now I'm off to play Double Dash and practice avoiding those Blue Shells.
