Xbox 'Fall' Update Brings Social Networking, No DivX

Social networking sites and the related paraphernalia of finding old ‘friends' with whom one hasn't spoken in 20 years and who, once added, will never be spoken too again are a small point of controversy in the TrustedReviews offices. Adding ‘friend finding' features to the Xbox 360, then, probably isn't going to please Riyad all that much - especially as he was hoping for DivX playback a la the PS3.

Coming on the 4th December, the much rumoured Xbox Fall update (yes, apparently in America December is still autumn) will be adding a new feature called Find Old Friends. Basically, this enables Xbox Live players to search for people without needing to know their GamerTag, which is helpful considering they generally end up as something obscure and unrecognisable. Of course, some of the more cynical of us may suggest that if your friends with someone you could just ask for their Tag, but I also think the moon is made of cheese so what do I know?

In addition to the above feature, Xbox owners will also be able to browse the friends lists of other members, presumably so you can compare your own Gamerscore to theirs; a sort of geeky equivalent of checking out your friend's friends' pics on MySpace I assume. Members can opt out of both schemes and by default 13-17 year olds have their profiles restricted to direct friends only with under 13s' blocked entirely. So, Messenger and Spaces have now made the transition to the console, the question now is what Live service will be the next too make the jump?
