TrustedReviews NewslettersSeeing as we've already seen one Sony rumour get confirmed this week, it seems appropriate that we should also have a denial of some sort as well. So, bringing the balance is the confirmation (so to speak) that the new 40GB version of the PS3 is still using the same 90nm Cell and RSX chips as its siblings.
The rumour started when some testing by German site Computer Base uncovered a not-inconsiderable 30-odd per cent decrease in the console's power draw. The testers attributed this reduction to a change in the manufacturing process of the chips inside but Sony says the saving actually comes from changing various other components.
Considering the purported die-shrink was being put forward by many as the only positive change in the new and, let's face it, crippled model, this news probably won't be too welcome. However, Sony does still promise that the move to 65nm is going to happen in the coming months and that, as with the Xbox 360, the Cell will get the upgrade first with the graphics chip following later.
