Sony probably wouldn't want to publicise it, but the PS2 is still selling like hot cakes, despite the introduction of more PS3 SKUs than I can shake a stick at. Of course with such gems of the gaming art as the beautiful Okami and the brilliant (but not as good as VII) Final Fantasy XII to entertain you, it isn't hard to see why.

Clearly Sony realises this, because the latest rumour has it that a new PS2 SKU will be coming early next year, with a few welcome enhancements over the current model. The best of these is the embedding of the power supply into the main console, eliminating the unsightly power brick and shaving off some production costs as well, which should be passed on to us humble consumers.

Despite having shifted over 120 million PlayStation 2s to date, Sony says it will shift another ten million this financial year, which is the same as its target for PS3 sales oddly enough. The rumours also suggest that the new PS2 would retail in the region of £75 or possibly even less. Sony isn't commenting on the reports, which given the recent history is practically a confirmation in itself.
