It has been close to two months since we had a PS3 price-cut rumour so of course another has now surfaced. According to a mole who US site Ars Technica claims has 'a great track record' the 80GB model is soon to take the price point of the current 60GB model at $499 once stocks of the latter are finally exhausted, which should be soon. Apparently this reduction would coincide with the introduction of a 40GB console costing $399.

As well as the price, the new packages are also reported to be coming with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray, which is hardly surprising as Sony seems to to be chucking it in the box with just about every other product the company sells currently. What is more important is that as with the Casino Royale deal, throwing in a high-definition film lets buyers who remain (astonishingly) unaware of that aspect of the machine realise just why they need high-def.

In the UK one would expect the 40GB model to be around about £350, which would make it a much closer rival to Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite console, and could be a crucial move coming up towards Christmas. Of course there isn't anything stopping the Xbox taking a price hit as well at the same time, especially if the imminent move to 65nm is improving the margins.

Full details are expected to be announced at the Tokyo Game Show to which we look forward with baited breath. It has to be said though, if Sony doesn't do something to improve the public image of its system then it could be a less than merry Christmas this year.
