Taking a leaf out of both Sony’s “added value” and TR’s “lower the price” handbooks, Microsoft has decided to lower the price of its HD DVD player and bundle five free HD DVDs with it as well, an offer which was previously a Toshiba exclusive. There's a choice of 15 titles, one each from five groups of three, to select from, so there should be something to suit every taste. The price cut is minor, from $199 to $179, but as they say – every little helps. Although this is explicitly stated as a US only cut.

In addition to the new price, the Xbox 360 will also be having some new, downloadable, HD content available on the Xbox Live marketplace. From August 14th Zack Snyder’s truly brilliant 300 will be up for purchase and download. In addition, for a limited time before the release of Heroes: Season 1 on HD DVD, the pilot episode will be up for free download, again in High Def. All in all not a bad turnout, although you’re going to want to make sure you don’t exceed any bandwidth limits that your ISP may have imposed.
