According to analyst Michael Pachter, of US firm Wedbush Morgan, Sony's ever-decreasing console price is going to take yet another downwards turn later this year. The current $499 price of the console will net you a 60GB machine, which as we know is being phased out in favour of console with a larger capacity 80GB hard-drive and a bundled copy of (the rather good) Motorstorm, retailing at $599. So far, so familiar; but what Pachter goes on to say, is that he believes Sony is going to drop its 80GB console to the price of the current 60GB model.

He then goes further and suggests that Sony will probably introduce yet another drop early next year bringing the console to an Xbox 360 rivalling $399. Unfortunately, for us European folks at least, he makes no mention of whether pricing this side of the pond will take a similar downwards spiral. Going by past experience of Sony's attitude towards those of us who made the mistake of not being born in America, I wouldn't hold your breath.
