While the N-Gage pretty much encapsulated all the reasons you shouldn't use what is essentially a games device to make phone calls Nintendo's DS was first to ignore this logic. Consequently, you can't blame Sony for not paying attention either...

Instead it has coupled up with none other than British Telecom and the former monopolist telco has developed a VoIP client for the world's second most popular handheld gaming device. The system will employ BT's '21 Century Network' (21CN) and will be flexible enough to provide video calls if your PSP touts a Go!Cam.

Interestingly, the software will first become available in the UK and is initially only going to work on either home networks or BT wireless hotspots. BT did confirm however that the client will eventually be distributed to telecoms companies in 100 other counties. Being BT though, it then shut up completely and refused to say another word – at least anything specific – until August.

So if don't think the idea of walking down the street with your PSP held to your ear reeks of social leprosy and screams "Rob Me Now!" watch this space. I'll have more for you mugged social lepers in three months time...
