It's the (sole?) reason millions have upgraded the Windows Vista, so has DirectX10 been worth the wait?

Nothing will be decided today but nVidia, in partnership with Capcom, has released the first DirectX 10 game demo: Lost Planet. Some might question the profile of this title to launch such a hugely anticipated platform, but in the words of our own Stuart Andrews when reviewing the Xbox 360 version: " Visually, it’s nothing short of stunning."

So what can we expect? Well, 'Extreme High Definition' (XHD) support at up to 2560 x 1600 resolutions for a start, higher resolution special effects and improved lighting and shadows. Perhaps just as importantly, nVidia also stresses it has conducted extensive testing to ensure maximum compatibility and stability.

A word of warning to newbs: just because you have Vista doesn't mean you can run Lost Planet in all its DirectX 10 glory – you'll need a DirectX 10 capable graphics card too so only GeForce 8 Series owners and ATI Radeon HD 2000 Series owners need apply.

Of course whether Lost Planet turns out to be good, bad or indifferent it is impossible to judge a new gaming platform on the evidence of one title (a demo at that), but at least we now have one title...
