With the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 now out in the wild the Xbox 360 no longer has the market all to itself so Microsoft has decided to up the ante.

The company has announced that a new version of its IPTV technology will be engineered specifically for the console and will debut in time for Christmas. The service will broadcast high and standard definition television via a broadband connection and will feature time shifting and recording functionality (programmes are stored on the Xbox 360’s hard drive).

While there’s no word on which network(s) will be supporting the Xbox 360’s IPTV in the UK we do know that AT&T has inked a deal with Microsoft to provide it in the US. In some rather remarkable news – according to Engadget – the service will be fast enough to provide simultaneous broadcasting of two high definition channels and two standard definition channels but will require a router with dedicated QoS features to handle IPTV traffic.

Now, exciting as this announcement is, I had hoped to hear more on the rumours of a new version of the Xbox 360 itself which is said to be codenamed ‘Zephyr’. As well as the long anticipated CPU switch to 65nm – which will see the console run quieter and cooler, it is being reported that the Zephyr will also sport an HDMI port and a larger 120GB HDD. Both additions would make a lot of sense considering the launch of IPTV.

That said, for now we remain firmly in the land of rumour, speculation and fanboy Photoshopping so I’ll keep my ear closely to the ground because getting it dirty apparently improves hearing...
