In a report which may come as a shock to many – before they read between the lines – Microsoft scored a big hit last year when its Xbox 360 outsold both Sony’s PS3 and the hotly anticipated Nintendo Wii over the festive period.

According to CNBC the one year old console sold roughly two million units in the US between November and Christmas with Nintendo’s brand new (and cheaper) Wii managing just 1.8 million units and Sony’s pricey PS3 totting up a mere 750,000.

Now for those of you who aren’t fully signed up members of Mensa there is an obvious flaw in this Gatesian flag waving logic: availability. Both the Wii and PS3 didn’t launch until the latter half of November and while Nintendo managed to churn out a great number of machines in time for its arrival Sony was utterly useless so demand massively outstripped availability all round and is likely to for some time to come.

By contrast Microsoft has been churning out Xbox 360’s for so long it can produce them blindfolded and is already touting an upgrade the console’s CPU sometime in Q1. Do the maths… (not ‘math’ – we’re English, don’t you know?)

That said, the M$ boys deserved to tuck into their turkeys and raise a few glasses last week as Santa made his many trips down the world’s chimneys since what was proved is that many people weren’t prepared to wait for the Wii and PS3 to come into stock proving the point that he who laughs first laughs first…

…or something like that…
