It seems that every console has its defining controller from the NES, Megadrive, SNES and GameCube to PlayStation, PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360 but – in keeping with its troubled development – the PS3 is going to have a rival.

Logitech has thrown its hat into the ring with the ‘ChilliStream’ which it previously only announced for the PC. The name comes from a built-in 40mm fan which circulates air from inside the controller directly onto the four gripping fingers, base of the thumb and palm of the hand. Three settings – high, low and off – can be specified and Logitech claims the fans produce virtually no noise.

Elsewhere the ChilliStream appears very similar to the Xbox 360 gamepad with an identical button layout which includes two analogue sticks and dual triggers as well as a ‘Logitech’ centre button and rubber grips.

“The PlayStation 3 is sure to be a powerful gaming platform and we are pleased to offer a range of peripherals available at launch,” said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech´s director of product marketing for gaming. “And by extending our ChillStream technology to a controller designed for PlayStation 3, we are able ensure that gamers will have the best experience and play with one of the most advanced technologies on the market,” he added (no doubt with a cheeky grin).

The PS3 compatible ChilliStream will be available when Sony’s pricey console launches in the US in November and comes with an RRP of $39.99. For all those who were disappointed Sony stuck with a virtually identical gamepad to the PS2 it appears they will have a funky alternative from day one.
