Normally never one to let a major licensing opportunity slip, EA has today revealed that its latest addition to the monstrous FIFA series will miss the big kick off.

September 29 is the officially announced release date for the FIFA 07 across the board (GBA, NDS, PC, PSP, PS2, Xbox, NGC and mobiles) and with the Premiership underway on the 19 August and even the straggling and traumatised Serie A beginning 11 August eager gamers will be left twiddling their gamepads in frustration. Still, 07 does appear to be worth waiting for as the previously shallow graphical showcase inches ever closer to Pro Evolution Soccer which has suffered from two lacklustre sequels.

Two go with the inevitable talk of improved AI, more realistic passing and real world tactics this time around the EA bandwagon is promoting the overhauled physics with players jostling at set pieces and colliding as they try to win balls. World superstars also employ their signature moves so look forward to the Zidane headbutt and Ronaldinho and Frank Lampard World Cup no shows. A more sophisticated shooting mechanic is also said to give greater control to produce finesse shots as well as the ability to add top or backspin to the ball.

On the managerial side player values and wages have been tuned closer to their real world equivalents (which is dodgy considering Damien Duff is worth far more than £5m - nice one Glen - and Michael Carrick should be somewhere around £8m). Furthermore managerial decisions are purported to have more tangible effects on player performance and welfare, which seems fairly logical, while PS2 and PSP versions are interoperable enabling users to begin a game on one platform and continue it on the other.

So ultimately while the date may be dawdling FIFA 07 may well be worth it. Oh, and if you think I was sad enough to specifically pick out all the shots featuring Newcastle United players, you’d be right!
