Football Manager 2007 Majorly Overhauled

With the World Cup well and truly under way, the tricky Paraguayans negotiated, Germans typically efficient, Argies menacing and Ivorians hugely entertaining it seems only right to start this week’s news off on a football related matter.

Football Manager, the most perennial of all perennial soccer titles, is back once again to frustrate and delight us as well all prove we could do a better job blindfolded than Graeme Souness, Steve Bruce and Mick McCarthy combined. The last incarnation was typically excellent, but – as a few of you may remember from my review – left me somewhat cold from its near overwhelmingly weighty approach. Thankfully, a complete overhaul looks to be on the cards this time around with more emphasis put reinvigorating the title than simply padding it out.

As you can see from the screenshots FM2007 has undergone a significant redesign with collapsing menus, a higher resolution screen and a more graphical interface. The result will apparently not only be more user friendly to PC owners but, importantly, more intuitive to console pads.

Feeder clubs, a long term fan request, also make it into the series for the first time in FM2007 while youth teams have been completely revamped to improve the regeneration of players in longer games. Scouting too has been on the end of some spit and polish with reports now containing additional player character information and media interaction will be fast approaching real world Premiership levels with managers regularly expected to speak to the press.

FM2007 is targeting an Xmas release so expect the database to be completely up to date with all the wheelings and dealings that follow the World Cup frenzy. Fingers crossed one of them will see a disillusioned Ronaldino (following his side’s embarrassing 5-0 World Cup defeat to a Wayne Rooney inspired England) swapping the Nou Camp for St James’ Park…
