This Nintendo Revolution thing is it actually getting better or worse with each ‘innovative’ announcement? Quite frankly, I find it rather hard to tell…

The latest revelation clears up why the next gen console has no internal hard drive: it allows third party solutions. Not only should this reduce both the cost on the Revolution’s RRP and the price of additional storage it also lets users dictate what capacity they need. Yet do we interpret this as a) considerate, b) lazy, c) practical or d) unambitious?

I’m inclined to go with ‘c’ here but so much of the Revolution’s torturous development can be seen from a glass half empty or half full perspective. A recent example is the ‘leaked’ specification. Nintendo has long harked on that the Revolution is all about the games and won’t be challenging the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 in performance stakes. Well ok, fine, Nintendo has proved over the years that it is more than up to the job but what about all the other developers? How are they meant to feel about programming for a machine with a supposed 729MHz processor (the Xbox 360 has three 3.2GHz cores) and 243MHz graphics chip (the original Xbox managed 233MHz) – it’s hardly cutting edge stuff, is it?

Already two camps have appeared, one whose mantra can be summed up as ‘In Nintendo we trust’ and the other which laughs hysterically at every new Revolution development. Ultimately, I sense a third placed finish is in store but whether it is a tight Motocross-style bronze or a we’re-never-ever-going-to-get-elected-EVER Liberal Democrats one remains to be seen.
