We first reported back in December that the Xbox 360 was close to cracked. It has taken almost three more months but video evidence suggests the breakthrough has now been made.

Posted by known hacker ‘TheSpecialist‘, it shows the next generation console booting a copied disc of Project Gotham Racing 3 and was achieved by hacking the Xbox 360’s firmware to remove the security check which rejects all DVD+/-R discs.

“Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official it's been done,” said the jubilant hacker in a message that accompanied the video on forum xboxhacker.net.

In a move that will disappoint some of our more morally flexible readers, however, TheSpecialist and his buddies decided not to release their code saying it ‘advocates hacking, not piracy’. In all effect he/she has shown pirates the path though and when a discovery is ready to be made it tends to emerge from more than one source.

Personally speaking, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the first disc images of Xbox 360 titles on file sharing networks by the end of the month. Expect a ‘compulsory firmware update’ from Microsoft shortly after.

Anyhow, seeing is believing so without further ado check out the original release of TheSpecialist’s video here. It does require a RapidShare account so for those without a mirror can be found here instead. A wonderfully apt choice of music accompanies it…
