Saved up your hard earned cash, but not pre-ordered an Xbox 360 in advance? Want the Deluxe system which includes the 20GB hard drive? Oh dear.

It seems you should’ve spent more time memorising your boy scouts’ motto about always being prepared, because our market research tells us you’re pretty much stuffed. Yesterday I spent many hours calling round a vast number of major Xbox 360 retailers and they all had the same message: Core systems reasonable stock, Deluxe you gotta be kidding!

Now the average man on the street could put this down to some Evil Lord Redmond conspiracy (after all it is far more expensive to buy a Core system and its 20GB HDD separately so why not cash in on people’s desperation?), but I’m not so cynical. You see Friday will be the day of the hardcore gamer, the console fanboy who has been positively foaming at the mouth since last week. These people know what they’re doing and all of them (give or take ‘’none’’) will have put down their wedge on the more financially prudent Deluxe.

To quote an undoubtedly acne troubled floor manager at Game, ‘’Deluxes are the deal mate, they’re long gone.’’ The store manager at the Oxford Street HMV was equally elegant, ‘‘Cores are the vast majority of what we’ve got. You may want a Deluxe, but so did everybody else, they’re almost all pre-sold.’’

At this point I’m going to once again ask your British resolves to hold fast. Shake out those hands, take a deep breath and count to ten. If you haven’t pre-ordered one then sadly it is your fault. So if you do turn up to the midnight launches, don’t act all disappointed…

…and yes, Riyad does already have his Xbox 360 snugly in his possession. No, it hasn’t crashed at all and yes, you are allowed to hate him for it ;)
