PS3 Sneak Peak Announced As PSP Release Date Slips

It’s a case of there’s good news and bad news from Sony today. First off, the good news is the multinational giant is going to give us all a sneak peak of its new PlayStation 3 console by the time E3 comes around. Whether this will be before or at the event was not made clear but no doubt any kind of demonstration of the new console (which sports a version of the new Cell processor) will create a deep feeling of envy in all of us and cause immediate dissatisfaction with our current gaming systems of choice. Especially considering the PS3 is not expected to hit shelves until the first quarter of 2006. Still, a glimpse is a glimpse, right?

Yet, what good news Sony giveth it can also taketh away as the UK ship date for its incredibly tasty little PlayStation Portable (reviewed last month) has slipped back to 29 April. PSPs had been expected to arrive by the end of March, the same time as our (now) lucky US counterparts will still get theirs. As announced previously, US PSPs will cost $250, but how that translates over here, if at all, remains unclear.

Still, there is some compensation on hand as Sony has also announced the immediate availability of its rather smart looking XDR-M1 DAB FM Walkman. Promoted as Sony’s smallest DAB FM walkman to date, the palm sized 60x21x80cm (WxDxH), 119g device has a four line backlit LCD display, a 40 station preset capacity and comes equipped with a remote control. Playback is quoted as up to nine hours. The XDR-M1 (catchy Sony branding as always) comes with an RRP of £149 including VAT.
