Last weeks ECTS may not have been a particularly earth shattering affair but there was one product that not only caught our eye but our hands and feet as well.

The ActionStick is an add-on for PlayStation 2 that enables users to ‘get in the game’ like never before. It is a stick that unfolds and stands up in front of you. It’s covered with an array of sensors – eight in all, which detect your motion and translates it to your game character.

It works brilliantly with fighting games such as Tekken 4 and Soul Caliber and as response times are instant you really feel as if your part of the game. The sensors can detect forward and sideways motion and enable you to kick and punch in different ways. You can even make your character, jump, duck and weave.

For even more fun you can hook up a second stick and compete with a friend.

If violence isn’t your thing, the ActionStick also works with rhythm based games such as Space Channel 5 Part 2, Bust a Move and Parapa the Rapper.

PlayStation 2 owners also don’t’ have to have all the fun, as with an adaptor it can be made to work with Xbox and PC games.

The ActionStick is created by Korean company BestSoft but is being distributed in the UK and the rest of Europe by EDP Europe. BestSoft is keen to stress the benefits of using the ActionStick as the physical interactivity provides obvious health benefits In fact the company have figures claiming that gamers using the ActionStick for an hour will burn up more calories than swimming or jogging.

This is remarkable considering it is the opposite of what video games are normally associated with. However, EDP might not want to stress this point too much as gamers might start to miss being able to vedge out in front of the TV with their favourite game.

The ActionStick has a selling price of £80 and is available now.
