Google ponders a fix for the Pixel 2 XL’s biggest flaw
In our review, posted this week, the “lifeless” display is all that stood between the Google Pixel 2 XL and a perfect 10/10 score.
“It isn’t bad. But it simply isn’t in the same league as the panels manufactured by Samsung and used in its own flagships,” TrustedReviews’ mobile editor Max Parker pointed out in his assessment.
Chief among the complaints were the lack of vividness and an odd blue tint when viewing white portions of the screen.
The dissatisfaction has been echoed by other reviewers and early adopters who began receiving the handset this week. However, it appears Google is going to do something about it.
In a statement to 9to5Google, Google said it acknowledges the complaints and is seeking a software-based solution to livening up the 6-inch LCD display.
“We designed the Pixel 2 to take advantage of multiple facets of the innovative new POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution with 538 pixels per inch as well as a wide color gamut. One of our design intents was to achieve a more natural and accurate rendition of colors.
“We know that some people prefer more vivid colors, so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for more saturation. We’ll continue to pay close attention to people’s responses to Pixel, and we will consider adding more display color options through software if that makes the product better.”
Not vivid enough, it seems
The vivid colors option is enabled by default and brings users a 10% boost, but it doesn’t seem to be enough to satisfy those complaining about the screen.
If this was an unearthed setting folks could use to boost the display, it might be a different story.
Regardless, it appears like Google is investigating ways to bring relief to those upset with the display.
