As search engines go, I've always considered both Yahoo and Microsoft inferior.

Windows Live Messenger is a fantastic IM application, but I can see a whole lot of people switching when Trillian Astra is released. Yahoo isn't anything spectacular really, and add contacts that use either on both, it practically eliminates the need to have both.

Yahoo have an incredibly poor search engine. But their content and userbase are second to none. For instance, Yahoo Answers is one of the greatest communities going for Yahoo. Flickr too, one of the best photo sharing sites.I believe that Yahoo has a larger community than Google, but like myself I think people just use the yahoo communiity features, without ever using the search engine. That doesn't make advertisers too confident in investing in Yahoo.

Ironic since he rarely posts in here.

Hmm now as for the issue at hand.. in the short term I don't feel too worried. Who knows what 10 years could bring though.

As for Google's decision to knock Microsoft on this move, I don't think there is ever a bad time to criticise Microsoft's naughty business strategies.

As far as search engines are concerned, Ask.com are the best hands down, underdogs that slipped in and brought something really fresh and useful.

Now, in terms of web tools, google have everyone pretty much beat for now. Gmail, Greader, Picassa, Gmaps..etc are apps that have made great use of web 2.0 and it will take alot of dedication to usurp these.

Google are just scaremongering here really, playing to the usual crowd of anti ms folks and anyone that would jump on the bandwagon. They really shouldn't be so worried if they have a good product already, and their impending android OS is another boost to their consumer reach.

We'll see what happens from here onwards.

Gmail and Google Maps are absolutely second to none... but as for Picassa and Google Reader.. well I already have a way to view information on the internet and a way to manage the photos on my PC.. Windows Explorer and Firefox.

Microsoft are buying eyeballs. Not literally, that would be sick! Yahoo! has great content globally, and they have shown that they can stay at, or near, the top of the online content tree for the duration.

Microsoft's revenues from Windows and Office will plummet when they reach the point where they can't add anything more that's significant. How many people are still on XP and Office 2003 in 2008?

The money game, now and in the future, is the online world and if you stop the music now, Microsoft are not that big a player. Microsoft + Yahoo on the other hand - that could easily become the market leader. It would be difficult to see Microsoft maintaining its revenues for long without a move like this.

The search engine angle is not so clear, certainly two bad search engines don't add together to make one good one. However, perhaps that is not where the deal is coming from, that can be fixed later. The main result of this will be Microsoft online apps married with Yahoo! content. That's real competition for Google, and they know it.

This whole debacle is overvalued and provides a little bump to the nasdaq in bad times.

Google - great search engine becoming more and more swamped with advertiser links.
Google maps/world - a fantastic jaw dropping application but after you have searched relatives and their dwellings etc. unless you are a stalker of no real use at all.
GMail - another web based email application which is not unique really.
Google Docs - Why the hell would i want possible confidential documents stored somewhere I haven't got a clue with access to anybody?

Yahoo - Answers a great little community for lifes questions.
Erm cannot think much else

Just like "social networking" and the pretend friends it's totally overhyped ADD ME.
