I know this is a pretty old review, but i just came across it linked from another article and it seemed like it was a cry for help :¬)
I have tried many, many music juke-boxes over the years and have re-indexed my 40,000 tracks more times than I care to mention. I too was not impressed by the memory resident apps installed by iTunes and it was actually the database size that put me off using Windows media player.
The Jukebox that I keep coming back to because t does everything I need is JRiver's Media Jukebox (there are a couple of configuations depending on your media needs). You can get a free version, but I registered it years ago and have paid for the odd upgrade in-between. It doesn't do cover-flow but certainly handles media images in more ways than I need. Besides which when you have as many tracks as I do, then browsing through covers becomes tedious. It was also one of the first to allow you the ability to share a central database over ip, meaning that (given correct firewall configuration) you can listen to your entire music collection at work.
I'm not going to go into all the features, but surfice to say, I like it more than any of the competition because it does everything extremely well. So, if you're still looking for a replacement then I suggest you take a look.
