A Question of Integrity

I can remember writing product reviews back in the mid-nineties and having some gloriously bad examples land on my desk on a regular basis, but those days seem well and truly gone. It seems that the companies who continually produced bad products are long dead, and the ones remaining have learned that being late to market is often preferable to bringing something substandard to market. To be perfectly honest I really miss reviewing awful products, because it was a lot more fun than evaluating a constant stream of kit that’s either better than the last thing, or at least as good as it.
Of course we could dig up some truly bad products to review if we wanted to. There are dozens of Chinese knock-off MP3 players, notebooks or even digital cameras, but that would be of little value to my readers. What TrustedReviews is trying to give its readers is an insight into the products that they may be considering, rather than digging up something totally obscure and warning all and sundry to stay away from it.
Despite the fact that this era of average, better than average and great products can be a little dull for technology journalists, it’s actually great news for you, the consumer. What this means is that whatever you buy, there’s a pretty strong chance that you won’t end up with a turkey – it won’t necessarily be the best of breed, but you should end up with a perfectly usable device. But that’s what we’re here for, to tell you what is the best of breed, so you know what to splash your hard earned cash on.
Of course the funniest thing about emails like the one that Mr Paine sent is that we also receive emails from readers complaining when products don’t get a good review – usually because said reader has bought that product and doesn’t want to feel as if they have just flushed good money away.
In reality, with over a million of you reading TrustedReviews every month, I doubt if we’ll ever be able to make everyone happy. I imagine that there will always be some of you who won’t agree with our conclusions, or feel that we’ve been too harsh or too lenient, or even that we’ve neglected to review the particular product that you were considering. That said, at least the majority of you realise just how hard it is to run a publication like TrustedReviews, and believe me when I say that the occasional emails of encouragement and thanks really do make a difference to our working day.
Ultimately the point of TrustedReviews is to tell you, the reader, about the latest technology and provide impartial assessment of products that you may want to buy. Of course you’re not obliged to agree with what we write, but that’s the beauty of living in a democracy.
