So what will Apple do if the law is passed in France? Nobody knows but my guess is that it will simply shut up shop in France, which is only around five per cent of its market. Of course it may become more of a problem if other countries follow suit. There are rumours that Denmark is considering doing the same, and if it swept across Europe the pressure could start to mount up for Apple.
It would then come down to market forces and in the end it’s the market that determines the success of a product. The only way something will top the iPod and iTunes is if something better comes along. If may seem unlikely anything will, but you don’t have to look far to see once seemingly dominant platforms lose ground and be superseded. Hey, 3Dfx and Glide used to dominate the 3D gaming market, Uruguay was once a major power in world football. Times change, but while Microsoft comes up with nothing better than the Origami, I think we’ll be buying iPod and downloading from iTunes for a good while yet.

Moving from one monopoly to another I've noticed that Sky has finally got round to announcing its HD prices. And quite frankly I’m not happy. Sky wants £10 a month extra on top of existing customer’s packages. I already pay £33 a month so I can have my sport and Sky+ and sometimes I think I’m mad. At the current top package you’ll already be paying £42 – so with Sky HD you’ll be pushing £52 a month to Sky. And that’s in addition to the £299 you need to spend on the box.
Now when it comes to technology it’s not surprising to learn that I’m an early adopter but damn, that a lot of cash and those kind of numbers make me stop and pause. At least until I read that the BBC, which has the rights to the World Cup in HD will be making it available over Sky.
That’s the World Cup. In HD. Ohmygod. Haven’t I been waiting about four years for that? Ok, so it’s silly money, Mr Murdoch, where do I sign up?
The only thing stopping me from going ahead with this madness is that I don’t have an HD TV and I can’t see even the World Cup being enough to let the wife let me spend a fortune on one right now, especially as I spent about two grand on a TV back in 2000. Not to mention the fact that the new baby is due to arrive around the same time as the kick off for England’s first game
So right now, I’m going with plan B. Get a mate to spend a fortune on a new TV and Sky HD and watch all the games at his house instead. Now I wonder, is that piracy?
Bothered by DRM? Planning on getting Sky HD? Why not discuss in the forum?.
