Since I write digital camera reviews for a living, I’ve always got the latest models lying around waiting to be reviewed, but in fact I actually own only two, a digital SLR and set of lenses for professional use, and a neat little Pentax 5MP pocket compact for parties.

The compact is great, but frankly the SLR is getting a bit past it, so I’m hoping that I can convince someone who really likes me to buy me the new Fujifilm FinePix S9500 for Christmas. It’s a fantastic new 9.5 megapixel digital camera with a zoom lens equivalent to 28-300mm, and its picture quality rivals that of top-end professional digital SLRs.

Whoever buys it will be getting a real bargain, since at around £400 it’s actually a lot cheaper than an SLR, plus with that massive zoom range you don’t need to buy a lot of extra lenses for it. One big advantage of a fixed lens is that dust can’t get onto the CCD, a problem that I have had with my SLR on several occasions.
