It’s the User Interface, Stupid

As the purchaser you (the consumer) are at the end of a pretty complicated food chain when it comes to getting this ‘stuff’ from the operators servers and onto your handset. There can be quite a few companies involved in the process, all working to help you make that purchase. But in many cases it’s not easy to buy.
SurfKitchen reports that 80 per cent of 18-24 year olds abandon downloads if they don’t get their content within 10 seconds and that it takes users between 120-150 seconds to find content from a handset. Ouch – those stats sure don’t complement each other very well.
So what SurfKitchen www.surfkitchen.com does is helps the operator out with things such as; an easy to navigate user interface; a system that enables preview data to be downloaded to handsets at no charge to the user and unknown to them, so that it is really fast and easy to see if that ringtone you fancy is really any good; a system for updating the information on handsets so that new ringtones (or whatever) are visible to the user immediately.
Now, given the business model of those active in the mobile phone sector, this all seems like good common sense. Which brings me back to the nodding dog episode. (Sorry, did that just purged mental picture come back again? Think lovely thoughts, think lovely thoughts).
I’ve been reviewing quite a lot of Tablet PCs lately, and generally I am getting more and more drawn into the whole concept. I was initially a real sceptic, but the more I use Tablet PCs the more I value the ability to write to the screen and have my writing turned into text, and the more I value the ability to work in Tablet mode without using the keyboard at all. I’m not yet a complete convert, but I am being convinced.
One of the less subtle things that holds me back is the user interface – and this is where Riyad and I agree. I love the idea of prodding at the screen to get things done, but I hate that I have to use a special stylus rather than my finger, the back end of a pen, or whatever.
