With some questionable DisplayMate results, the RLT1720 does fair better on the style and features front. The whole unit is encased in an attractive, uncluttered dark grey bezel with a silver coloured border. There’s a carry handle around the back and the unit can be wall mounted via the 100mm spaced screw holes. The unit also features a pair of 2.5W speakers that sound better than average and have enough bass for general listening. Along with the component video ports mentioned earlier, there’s also an S-Video input together with left and right audio RCA ports and a line-in. A composite video input also resides at the rear. All the connectors are horizontally mounted, which could cause problems when mounting flush against a wall.

As for the OSD, this is easily navigable and the decision to mount the buttons on the top of the unit is a good one. The array of adjustments is standard for a TFT equipped only with a D-SUB port, and includes positional controls, the aforementioned PinP function (with it’s own selective audio setting), plus a user definable colour temperature mode and RGB fine-tuning.

When it comes to price the Relisys RLT1720 is not the cheapest LCD display but that’s largely due to its widescreen format and rich feature set. However, the image quality is not the best on the market and ultimately that’s the most important factor.

Verdict

Widescreen desktop displays are rare at the moment, so it’s fair to expect prices to fall when and if production on a larger scale begins. The RLT1720 is certainly a good-looking unit with plenty of connectivity, but the screen’s overall display size and performance may steer it away from its intended home entertainment market.
