Apple Launches First LED Backlit Cinema Display

While laptops were the heart and soul of Apple's big launch tonight (all the details coming soon from Hugo) Steve Jobs did have one pleasant surprise for us in another product category...

In a long overdue move, the Cupertino based love it / hate it company has unveiled its first LED backlit monitor in the shape of a new flagship 24in model and it should have everything you'll need... maybe.


Ok, that's horribly cryptic but let's get the positives out the way first: superficially, it looks stunning as do most Apple products, tying in with the new Air-esque MacBook lines and it offers a 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution (as it jolly well should) along with integrated iSight camera and mic, stereo speakers, MagSafe charging connector, a 3x USB 3.0 hub and mini DisplayPort.

"The new LED Cinema Display is the most advanced display that Apple has ever made," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "It is a perfect fit for our sleek new line of aluminum (US-sic) MacBooks."


Well, yes it is but only in a typically Apple-ish way because - as you've probably spotted by now - the 24 incher doesn't sport HDMI, just like their new notebooks. Yep, for such a multimedia friendly display this really does seem a big miss but with Jobsy describing Blu-ray as "a bag of hurt" today (despite being an official BDA member) that doesn't look set to change any time soon - though adaptors will be made available.

The 24in 'LED Cinema Display' - to use its formal title - will go on sale from next month in the US with a reasonable-ish RRP of $899. As for we Brits, batten down the hatches, adopt the brace position and pray for the best as Apple prepares to put its notorious fickle currency converters into action...

While I agree that most people won't NEED HDMI, there will always be some people that do use there PC setup for all their gaming and a lot of their AV stuff. To simply disrega... more

Can anyone give me reasons why I should buy this rather than the much cheaper Dell 2408WFP? Except for the looks obviously.

They have left out the HDMI because that is what other companies use. Apple don't want equipment made by other companies being plugged into it and polluting the Mac-sphere. If... more
