It isn't only Fujitsu Siemens hugging pandas and French kissing trees with its latest monitors...

Old war horse NEC is getting in on the act too announcing the physically impressive 26in 'MultiSync EA261WM'. The new flagship model of the company's MultiSync EA series, the display gains its green credentials not from zero watt standby energy usage but - perhaps more practically - a very low environmental impact in manufacturing and a reduced power running mode.

Attaining the EPEAT Silver Certification (in the white edition) and gold certification (for the black) the EA261WM passed scrutiny in its energy consumption and efficiency, use of hazardous materials, recycling, packaging and method of production and offers an 'EcoMode' which reduces screen brightness to save power consumption in use and reduce CO2 emissions.

As for the tech worthiness of the LCD itself, the EA261WM hits all the right notes with a 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution, 5ms response time, 400cd/m2 brightness and wide 170 degree viewing angle. The contrast ratio is a more meagre 1,000:1 but with the infamous ambiguity in this Venus Flytrap of a spec I wouldn't read too much into it.

Lastly, thought has gone into the design as well with both landscape and portrait modes available, a 110mm height adjustable stand, Carbon footprint meter, USB hub and integrated speakers all discretely packed in. HDMI however isn't on the menu but DVI-D with HDCP suggests you won't miss it and a mini D-Sub is there bringing up the rear.

On sale immediately for a very precise £534.62, the NEC EA261WM is certainly one of the more interesting displays you could find nestled on your desk, but if it doesn't bring birds singing to your window in mass appreciation Mary Poppins style demand a refund.
