'Short throw' is likely to become the buzz word around home cinema projectors over the next 18 months, but until the technology - which allows large images to be projected from just a few feet (and in some cases a few inches) - reaches HD quality we'll have to put up with it having a more professional focus.

To this end then we get the Epson 'EMP-400W' a business projector capable of producing a mouthwatering 60in picture when positioned just 65cm from the projection surface. Using a 3LCD panel, the 400W can also manage a 1280 x 800 native resolution and displays 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios automatically.

Bulb life is good too offering 4,000 hours in economy mode before needing to be replaced while an active noise level of just 28db means it is barely audible. At 327 x 258 x 95mm and 3.6kg the 400W is reasonably portable and discrete too. Sadly any bleeding edge cinephiles desperate to pervert this projector's more humble ambitions will find themselves disappointed by the 400W's lack of HDMI connectivity (RGB and VGA are the staples) and no dedicated HD image processing technology.

Still, with a £999 (ex VAT) retail price boardrooms are likely to benefit greatly from the 400W's simple setup and its three year warranty should satisfy even the most paranoid of electronics purchasers. So a hearty fillip for the suit and tie brigade/

That said, only when short throw technology appears in the consumer space will we truly be happy. After all, is a two inch short throw, 80in 1080p picture and projector sat just above the Sky HD box really too much to ask...? ;)
