Competition is the spice of life…

We've already seen two generations of micro-sized protectors from Texas Instruments but now 3M has weighed in with its own.

The display specialist has shown off a miniature unnamed LED-based model which it claims is capable of projecting a VGA resolution video over 40 inches while being "designed for integration into virtually any personal electronic device". Furthermore, despite measuring a Sci-Fi-ish 1.27cm across, 3M says the technology is ready for deployment today.

"3M mobile projection engines achieve the size, efficiency, image quality and affordability needed for consumer adoption of this promising new product category," said Mike Kelly, executive VP of 3M's Display and Graphics Business. "This development continues 3M's long history as a global leader in advanced projection display technology. What is really exciting is that this technology is available now."

3M says the projector's image quality also contains no-speckle and has a high (though undefined) fill factor. Each engine uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) electronic imager in conjunction with proprietary 3M optics technology.

Enticingly, 3M claims it is currently "partnering with leading consumer electronics companies that plan to launch products in early 2008". The projector will be demoed at CES this week and finger's crossed for consumer products soon after…
