Whenever Dell announces a new 30in LCD there's always great excitement, but its latest brings with it more than usual.

The big news for the '3008WFP' is that it comes with what is sure to be the centre of 2008's connectivity PR blitz: DisplayPort. The cheaper, licence-less HDMI rival - which also manages to pump HD video and audio through a single cable - makes arguably its most high profile debut so far, though that isn't to overshadow this monster's other charms.

Dell has all bases covered on the 3008WFP with a native 2560 x 1600 resolution, impressive 370 nits brightness, 3000:1 contrast ratio and proportionately lightning-fast 8ms response time. Backing up DisplayPort are DVI-D (with HDCP), S-Video, component and composite along with HDMI (clearly the two will be squabbling stable mates for some time to come).

Funnily enough, Dell has actually beaten graphics card vendors to the punch because the 3008WFP goes on sale immediately for $2034 (just under £1,000) whereas DisplayPort totting models from AMD/ATI and nVidia won't surface in large numbers until Q1 2008.

Still, if you've got a spare grand burning a hole in your pocket (and let's face it, which banker doesn't?) then it's always good to be ahead of the curve, right?
