Wondering why there aren't more 22in LCDs that go above the defacto WSXGA (1680 x 1050) native resolution? Toshiba certainly is...

Stunning, well... everyone it has come up with a prototype 22in display with an incredible 'QUXGA-W' 3840 x 2400 native resolution. Obviously it isn't meant for the mainstream (though I can think of a few hardcore gamers who'd like to give it a whirl), but rather for medical diagnosis, map information systems and aerial photography.

Funnily enough, being a prototype, this sadly un-photographed LCD has specifications which quickly drop off once you move away from its killer 4x UXGA res. For a start it has a brightness rating of just 235cd/m2, a weedy 300:1 contrast ratio and then flops out with extremely limited 120 degree vertical and 100 degree horizontal viewing angles.

Rather unsurprisingly, such a monstrous resolution also requires dual DVI input despite its relatively small physical dimensions.

Tosh plans to have this monstrous yet miniature whopper on sale by spring next year for a massive 312,900 yen (almost £10,000) and will sell an accompanying (but at this moment unexpanded upon) video card to pair with it for £1,400!

Can it be modded to play Crysis? We can but try... ;)
