I've heard some dubious 'World's First..." claims in my time, but this one takes the biscuit.

This week Gateway has announced the 'world's first Quad HD display' (ie 2560 x 1600 = 4x 720p), the 30in 'XHD3000' LCD - a monitor which arrives a whole 30 months behind the industry's first such model, the Apple Cinema Display which we tested in early 2005!. Besides this, we have also seen 30in 2560 x 1600ers from Dell, HP and Samsung - many of which are on their third or fourth generation. World's first indeed...

This nonsensical statement aside however the XHD3000 looks a reasonable match for the models already out there with the aforementioned 2560 x 1600 native resolution plus an defacto 1,000:1 contrast ratio, average 400cd/m2 brightness, zippy 6ms response time and wide 178 degree viewing angle.

Equally competent are the numerous connectivity options with HDMI, DVI, Component, Composite, S-Video and VGA all present along with a remarkable six USB ports and plethora of audio options. An IR remote is also bundled.

For a company which prides itself on price, the XHD3000 isn't perhaps as cheap as we might expect coming in at $1,699 (Dell's 3007WFP is currently $1,499) but it is being made immediately available.

Welcome to party Gateway, better late than never...
