It is a mystery to me why manufacturers are so keen to up the resolutions on notebooks yet keep them so low on dedicated LCDs, but at least one is now bucking the trend...

Today Lenovo has announced the 'L220x' - (perhaps remarkably) the world's first 22in LCD to sport a 1920 x 1200 native resolution. Of course desktop retail space aside, the other major boost such a pixel count brings is support for Full HD (1080p) video playback since 1680 x 1050 is an infamously frustrating 30 pixels short.

Looking elsewhere Lenovo says the L220x will cover a respectable 92 per cent of the colour gamut, feature a zippy 6ms response time, wide 178 degree viewing angle and MoR-ish 300cd/m2 brightness and 1000:1 contrast ratio. More innovatively, autorotation of the screen between landscape and portrait layouts is a nice bonus while DVI with HDCP support is virtually taken as given these days even if it would have been nice to see HDMI connectivity in there.

An extremely reasonable $550 US price tag has been pinned to the L220x but strangely no release date. Fingers' crossed however it finally marks a change in the sluggish expansion of LCD resolutions. After all if my three year old 15.4in notebook can handle a 1650 x 1050, shouldn't desktop displays be quantum leaps ahead...
