It was eight years ago when I got my venerable Hitachi 19in CRT (only recently disposed for in favour of Sammy's 22in 226BW). Friends and family questioned the practicality of its monstrous size and yet if you haven't pushed beyond 20 inches these days you're clearly well behind the game.

So with the public's lust for ever larger LCDs LG has decided it can hold off no longer on joining the (literal) big boys. The result is the 'L245WP' a sleek 24 incher with a 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 8ms response time. There's a 178 degree viewing angle and 500cd/m2 brightness with an Anti-Glare panel.

So the stats look pretty good, but the L245WP's main selling point is its support for HDMI with HDCP. Component is also available if you are a little less forward thinking and a USB2.0 hub offers up two ports. PIP functionality is also on the menu which only adds to the display's multimedia creds.

The L245WP goes on sale now with an RRP of £599 which pitches it pretty competitively against the existing offerings from BenQ, Dell and Samsung. Of course you can pick up Acer's 24 incher, the AL2416WS, for under £400 these days but we weren't that impressed.

My poor old Hitachi, how times have moved in...
