After Panasonic and BenQ made with the heavy hitting it appears an avalanche of affordable 1080P projectors are about to snowball us into oblivion and Epson is more than happy to join the cascade.

The ‘PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080’ is its personal take and is Epson’s first projector to do the full 1920 x 1080. It packs a ball-busting 12,000:1 contrast ratio (higher than both the Panny and BenQ – though I’ve mentioned before how these figures can be manipulated) and a nice brightness of 1,200 ANSI lumens.

Three separate LCD chips (the usual blue, green and red) are used here (fanboys can be heard high fiving as well speak – is there such thing as an Epson fanboy?) and this should help to reduce motion blur and sharpen images.

On the connectivity side of things there is the all-important HDMI and it is backed up with the usual suspects: composite, component and S-Video. With a projected (sorry, my bad) RRP of $5,000 it appears that the PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080 will beat the Panny’s £3,500 street price, even with being-British tax dolloped on.

January is expected to be the month of release and for home cinema junkies I would suggest you leave a little cash tidied over from the Chrimbo and New Year’s festivities. More thrift, less extravagance… bad extravagance, bad.

Update: Epson has confirmed the PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080 will be one of the first projectors on the market to feature HDMI 1.3 connectivity. Very nice indeed.

Update 2 Epson UK has confirmed an estimated UK price of £2,799 inc VAT. Expect the EMP-TW1000 to hit UK stores in February.
