It appears that 22 inches is fast becoming the new 20 inches. Following promising and well priced outings from Iiyama, Mirai and the first sighting of Samsung’s 225BW anything smaller no longer cuts the mustard.

Lenovo is the latest company to spot this growing trend (yes, it does make LCDs) and has entered the field of play with the very promising D221 (I know the pic is small, we're working on it!).

Like most 22 inchers on the market the native resolution is an extremely eye friendly/expansive WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) while the 700:1 contrast ratio is above average as is the 5ms response time. Brightness is more typical at 300cd/m2 and the 176 degree horizontal viewing angle is pretty much a defacto these days. Lenovo also supplies the vertical viewing angle (160 degrees) but why you’d be straddling your monitor or lying underneath it - without some serious dominatrix/submissive issues - is rather beyond me.

As for connectivity you’ll find 2x DVI inputs and a D-Sub. For those bemoaning the lack of HDMI all grumblings will be allayed by the fantastic 52,000 yen (350 euro/£235) price tag.

As the currency suggests, Japan will be seeing the D221 first but don’t rule out some D221 love being shown to we Europeans (and perhaps an elongated grope for the Yanks). Come on Lenovo, kissy kissy

Update: Official UK pricing just came in from Lenovo (23 Jan '07). Total cost (incl. VAT) is £305.50. Bugger.
