LG is not the first company to patent a product line called the ‘Fantasy Series’, but it is probably the first where you don’t need to be over 18 to buy from it.

Instead LG has coined the phrase to refer to its new line of design-happy LCDs consisting of the Ring (above), Eclipse and Jar (below left and right). Each one is designed with a piano black finish and emits a soft red glow in a deliberate attempt to marry up with the company’s phenomenally successful line of Chocolate mobile phones. Furthermore, like these handsets, the Ring, Eclipse and Jar also feature touch sensitive controls.

As for the technical tomfoolery behind these styling showcases the trio cut a perfectly acceptable path (1280 x 1024 native resolutions, 2000:1 contrast ratios, 4ms response times, 300 cd/m2 brightness, DVI and 170 degree viewing angles) but I can’t help but think they would have benefited from widescreen aspect ratios with each model representing a different resolution. For example, Ring: 17in, 1280 x 1024; Eclipse: 20in, 1680 x 1050 and Jar: 24in 1920 x 1200.

That said the Fantasy Series still has a remarkably striking presence and they are sure to join specialist lines such as Acer’s Ferrari LCDs in capturing the imagination once they launch early next year. The Ring will be first off the production line with an anticipated RRP of £260.

Yes I know, the obvious pun: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all…” I was there long before you, but I resisted. Well, kind of.
