VGA Screens Now Under Two Inches

If there is one aspect to mobile phones which has not been advancing at the speed of a herd of supermodels eyeing diet pills then it is their screen resolutions. 240 x 320 has been the norm for any high quality handset for a while now, but thankfully that appears set to change.

General screen show off Samsung has predictably been the company to break the mould by demonstrating a VGA (480 x 640) resolution inside a teeny 1.98in panel which also manages a 300:1 contrast ratio, 16m colours and proportionately bright 250 nits. To give some idea of the level of technology involved here Samsung explains that the average 40in High Def LCD TV has 400 pixels per square inch whereas the 1.98in panel has 400ppi or 10x as many.

At this stage we don’t yet know when we can expect a mass roll out of these miniature marvels (or what models they’ll be slotted into) but I suspect it will be roughly a month after we extend our 12/18 month voice tariffs. Of course a major question mark over these new screens is just how easily text can be read when shrunk to this new resolution but I don’t feel I’d be making the greatest sacrifice this side of a wet t-shirt judge if I volunteered to find out…
