LG TFTs Set New Contrast Record

It may not be the most exciting industry record to break but in the never ending quest for greater picture quality, a super high contrast ratio isn’t a bad place to start.

Using a technology called Digital Fine Contrast (DFC), LG – or Lucky Goldstar as it will forever be etched into my brain – has managed to double the typical industry standard of 700:1 contrast ratios to a whopping 1600:1. Given that a high contrast ratio enhances the extreme ends of the colour scales the net result should mean colours are brighter, images more vivid and text becomes sharper.

I really don’t want to get into breaking this technology down because, well… it’s boring, but in serving the interests of geeks everywhere here it goes…

The DFC engine is comprised of three units: ACR (Auto Contents Recognition) detects the type of content that you are viewing and decides how to make the best use of the enhanced contrast. This decision is influenced by the monitor’s Mode setting, for example in ‘Movie’, ‘Text’ or ‘Picture’. The second element is DCE (Digital Contrast Enhancer) which reduces black luminance and the third, DCM (Digital Contrast Mapper), displays the image while ensuring that the enhanced contrast is optimised.

Though I’m now bored out my gourd I’m sure the results will be great. The first LCDs to get DFC will be available from April beginning with the all new 80 Series (L1780Q plus, L1980Q plus), 70 series (L1770H, L1970H) and 32 Series (L1932P, L1732P). Pricing’s a no no at this stage.

Now if someone goes and breaks the brightness record I would like to say at this point I will extend my arm and shake them warmly by the hand, just as long as they also don’t expect me to care how it works…
